The speculation had been running rampant, but now it’s official! San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom has formed an exploratory committee for a run at the Governator’s Mansion. So does the bluest Mayor in a blue state have a chance to run it, or will he be singing the blues when it’s all said and done? He’s facing some stiff competition from Jerry Brown, John Garimendi, and Antonio Villaraigosa, as well as many others in a crowded field of Dem hopefuls. The race is beginning to resemble the 8-way race for MA-8 back in 1998 when Joseph Kennedy retired… and I for one, couldn’t be happier! These races can get really interesting! (Shout out to Rep. Mike Capuano: SomerVILLE!)

California Majority Report has a convenient ranked list of contenders available and Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D), 47th CD, isn’t on it. Sure, it’s a little early to speculate on the next election cycle, but… well, no really it’s not.

Think about it. Both parties’ dirty laundry is expected to be aired out in the coming months, so they’re both vulnerable. How many Californians are happy (or will be in 2010) with their own version of the old Massachusetts power structure of Republican governor and Dem-controlled legislature? Will Yahweh provide Rosie Avila some kind of divine miracle to help her defeat Sanchez this November, and if so, will she be weakened or liberated in her highly-anticipated fight for control of the Executive?

The answers to these questions and more will come out in the weeks and months ahead. Any predictions from those of you who prefer Juice over Kool-aid?
